Window Boxes

Lately I talk a lot about the changes I want to make to my home in order to make it the way I want it. Since I live in an apartment, I have to get permission from the owners before I can make changes. They’ve given me permission to make any improvements I want to the interior but I have to check with them about specifics regarding the exterior. There is one thing that I want to do that I don’t think they’ll go for and that’s perhaps add some window boxes to the outside of the windows. It will improve the look drastically but I think the reason they wouldn’t allow it is simply because then my unit will look different from every other unit and the owners like the place to be uniform.
Even though windowboxes are generally put in place to improve aesthetics, as it does make the windows look nice, there are other uses for them. My grandmother uses them to grow a few herbs and she has a window box right inside the kitchen window where it’s easy for her to access. I never thought of putting one on the inside until I saw that she does it, and it’s very handy.
Another practical use, and one that I am thinking about doing is getting a few window box planters and placing them on the inside of the patio fence. I would use the planters to grow carrot tops, cilantro, parsley and a few other small leafy plants that our bunny can eat. We are about to get another bunny so I think growing their food might be a way to save a little money.
