Did you know that every 71 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease? Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in our country, and right now there is no known cure. You can help raise awareness as well as raise money for Alzheimer care, support, and research by joining The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk in your area. Join over 200,000 people this year in the walk to help fight this debilitating disease. Go to www.alz.org/memorywalk and find a walk in your area. On September 13, 2008 there is a walk in Houston, which is within 10 miles of my home. There are also two others taking place in October that are within 30 miles from me. The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk not only gives you a purpose for walking, but it also offers you the opportunity to get some exercise.

If you can’t or don’t want to walk, there are tons of other ways you can volunteer to help. You can start a fundraiser in your area, or online. You can also make a donation or try to get large companies to make donations or matching gifts. You can also be a team captain. You don’t have to walk to be a team captain. Your job as captain is to motivate your team to raise funds and increase awareness for the cause, and rally the walkers. You can also help your local Alzheimer’s Association plan events and secure locations. You can make a difference.
